Family Obligations and Their Roles in Medea and Force Majeure Maternal and paternal instinct drive many family obligations, one major obligation being caring for your children and making sure that they survive. This one theme is tested in both Force Majeure and Medea and if it wasn’t, there would be no driving plot to either works. In Force Majeure, Ebba and Tomas’ relationship strains are created as a result of Tomas abandoning his family during the avalanche that happens. As a parent, one is expected to think of their children first in a life or death situation and preserve their offspring at all costs. Tomas tends to stray from that ideal and at the beginning of the movie it is hinted at that Tomas has â€Å"been working so much† and â€Å"now he has time to focus on his family†. Already one can infer that life can get pretty stressful for the husband and wife if the one is always away and focused on work and not so much raising the kids. Mothers as wel l as fathers also are expected to maintain a maternal instinct as well. We see that Ebba is very maternal in her values and attitudes towards her kids as it’s shown that throughout the movie. In addition to physically protecting your children, a parent also has an obligation to emotionally protect their kids. Whenever she wants to argue with Tomas, they take it outside of the hotel room, or do it when their kids are not around, like at dinner in front of Charlotte and her friend.
